Second-hand dress love affair

Consignment store dress; thrifted carpet bag and Kenneth Cole booties - all found in Toronto;
ring, a gift from Hubby from eastern Europe;
necklace, found in a France thrift shop
(29 weeks)

I have such a love affair with this dress. I bought it in Toronto, Canada a few years ago for about $35 in a consignment shop. It was a bit steep for what it was, I thought, but I loved it so natch, I bought it.

Single gal when I bought it: Sept. 2010, with consignment store shoes, thrifted earrings and lacy tights.

At the time, it was fall 2010, and I was getting ready to fly overseas to the UK to visit my then beau, now my hubby. I bought this dress especially for that trip.

It took me through the courting phase, haha. (EDIT: Had to crop hubby out on request).

During that trip, hubby-to-be took me to the lovely Inn at Whitewell on the edge of the Lake District. Here we are getting smashed at dinner. I wore the dress with black tights and pewter-toned heels. Great memories!

Single gal to wife-to Mom-to-be dress!

I almost got rid of it while doing my closet-cleanout before moving overseas - and I'm so glad I didn't. At this stage in the game, it makes a perfect pregnancy dress. I just tied the removable belt under my boobs for comfort, and to give me the illusion of a waist.

(You can see in the background that I've been reunited with one of my long-lost vintage bags left in Canada - a gorg and great-sized satin-lined carpet bag in boo-tiful colours - that a friend brought over for me - YAY!).

I don't think I'll ever get rid of this dress - it holds too much meaning now. I tend to be like that with clothing.

Do you have many love affairs with clothing or accessories, for sentimental reasons?

  2. I love the pic of you and your man at dinner having a good time. I attach lots of sentimental meaning to my clothes. It makes it that much harder to filter your closet! The carpet bag fantastic-- love anything with a carpet/tapestry fabric.

    1. Be my, the pics get funnier as the night progressed, but I won't show them as I look pretty silly smashed. :) That carpet bag was such a happy buy - aside from being amazing, it's larger than most and therefore a wee bit more useful to a gal that throws everything into her handbag! Xo

  3. Unfortunately, I'm sentimental and silly about most things never mind clothing - books, records, favourite mugs, you name it! Your dress is utterly perfect and I'm in love with the carpet bag and boots. xx

    1. I hear you. I'm still thinking of stuff I let go of when I moved overseas. I kept the meaningful stuff but when you're a thrifter, you tend to be sentimental about all the great deals you find! Xoxo

    1. Thanks, Liz. Why don't men feel the same, I wonder? ("Hunny, I remember when you wore that dress when I took you to the Inn at Whitewell and we got smashed."). :) xo

  5. Love your carpet bag! I'm still wearing a long sleeved t shirt I wore whilst pregnant and my daughter is now six and a half. It's super soft and riddled with holes but I can't imagine throwing it away!
Your bump is so neat! xx

  6. Ahh, you're glowing and I love your pixie haircut. The dress is adorable and I love it with that cool purse and the boots. I think you've inspired me to wear mine today. Now I just need a purse like that.
I'm not sure if I have a love affair with a particular item in my closet. I guess because I've had such foot problems I hugely appreciate a comfortable pair of boots that happen to look good too. Not such an easy quest!
    Happy weekend!

    1. Joni, I am starting to appreciate the comfy footwear thing. Since moving to a place where cobblestone streets abound, and now with the pregnancy, I am wearing nothing but flat, comfy shoes. Very hard to find at the best of times, as you suggest, and especially in the thrift shop! Xo

  7. Hi there! You are right, it's an amazing dress and has seen so much of life through you in such a short space of time!! Loving the picture of you and your hubby looking so radiant and happy! My Chanel jacket, although I don't wear it often always reminds me of my first and favourite blog meet with Wendy Brandes-we went to Trudie Stylers charity sale in London (she wasn't there, but her unwanted wardrobe was!) and both nabbed really amazing designer bargains! xxx

    1. Wow, you went to Trudie Stylers' clothing charity sale? Must have been mobbed. Love that she sold her clothes for a charity. Must see that Chanel jacket! Xo

  8. Oh my Gosh, i LOVE that dress! thanks for your comment. I feel like i am in a new phase, or a phase i just forgot!
I suppose I am so tired of conformity and I fell into the peacock syndrome to get more attention last year. I am having my debut as a still growing 48 year old ;) AND, your baby bunp is the cutest i've ever seen. I am jealous as Rod and I didn't have kids-I had to have a hysterectomy and felt like an alien munichfor a very long time. Congratulations!
    big hugs,

    1. Dear Reva, don't be too hard on yourself. Change can be so good for the soul. You will always be a beautiful boho chicka to me! I'm 42 and still feel like a kid. :) I am sorry to hear about the hysterectomy. I never imagined I'd be here, I can tell you that! Many thanks for the kind wishes. You are amazing! Xo

  10. You never know who the real keepers are do they? Then they stick around, come in handy, give you comfort, and make you feel cool and wrapped in love. And they become yours for life. I'm talking about the dress, but I guess that applies to people. Sometimes the sleepers are the real treasures.

You look gorgeous, single days and mom-to-be.

    1. Aw thanks, Bella! You are right: this one crept up on me. Funny how that happens. And yes, I guess that can happen with people in your life too. Often the flashy, intoxicating peeps that so entrance you at first don't have the staying power of the true gems, do they? Xo

  11. That dress is gorgeous, I'm so glad you didn't part with it as it looks as fabulous now with a baby bump as it did on a love-up single gal! I wouldn't leave that carpet bag unattended, Curtise will pop up and steal it away! xxx

    1. Haha, yes, it's a very Curtise bag, I know she'd love it, Vix. Of course, since you live closer she could feasibly come over to yours and steal all your carpet bag goodies! Xoxo

  18. It's great you kept it, it's such a pretty dress anyway and even better that it doubles as a maternity dress too. Love the boots. I've got a pile of too small clothes in the attic I can't get rid off

    1. Ah yes, Clare, I do know what you mean. I already have a bunch of vintage dresses that are wee on me, and I'm not sure they'll ever again fit. It will be really hard to let them go!

  19. Aah you're looking gorgeous, I hate to use the word 'blooming' but it's true! I'm guessing a post on style is not the place to share that I still have (and wear) some maternity pyjama bottoms from my first pregnancy 8 years ago?! (They're comfy!)

    1. Hey, I'm all about comfy these days, Lakota, so much so that I'm not sure I can ever go back to boots with any form of heel, or fitted skinny jeans - so no judgement here! xo

  20. You look gorgeous in that dress, Kelly, it was definitely an excellent decision to keep hold of it. You look so well and so happy (I say this in every comment at the moment but it's TRUE!)
I am laughing at Vix's suggestion that I may try and steal your bag - ooh, I am having a little fit of jealousy, as it happens, it's such a beauty!
Pissed photos - always a joy! You manage to look elegant and cheery, rather than mad-eyed and lary, which is how I look after a few glasses too many...
I am quite sentimental about objects, clothes included, though I feel is is a bit ridiculous to be so attached. They are only things, after all, but I do invest them with meaning and memories. xxx

    1. Ah, thanks for kind words, Curtise - the next pics I post I may not look so glowing! That bag sure is a keeper; have a few more in Ottawa that are pretty fab too so hopefully they'll wing over here soon. As for the pissed pics, well, I didn't post the ones hubby snapped when I was **really** pissed, LOL. As for getting sentimental, I let go of a lot of stuff when I moved here, telling myself the same thing - but the truth is, I love my stuff!! (Then, when it starts spilling out of cupboards and closets and I feel the need to purge, I hate it, sigh.). xoxo

Thanks for commenting - you make my day! With bebe coming at the end of May, I'm sorry to say I won't be responding to each and every comment as I normally do - please know I will be posting when I can and reading all comments, and that I so value your readership. :)

Unfortunately due to excessive spam and almost going crazy moderating 50 comments an hour, I've had to turn on the dreaded word verification. Sorry guys.
