This picture, taken in the fall just before I left Toronto for good, is blurry - but it's apt as the vintage carpet bag featured therein is quickly fading from my memory ....
No, it's not one of many given away or sold en masse when I moved overseas. I had just bought it and I specifically remember saying to myself, "I want to keep that" and packing it in a box with other vintage purses. The problem is, I can't find the box. It didn't come overseas so I hope it's hiding in my Mom's basement somewhere.
This darling little patent number with great hardware is missing too. It was only a few bucks a Goodwill in Toronto. Wah. Wah. Wah.
It's just so ironic that I gave away sooo many vintage handbags, only to have the truly special ones go missing in action.
This leather one wasn't vintage but it was thrifted for a song and also designer. WHICH designer I can't recall as it's GONE. Hopefully not forever. There are more, but I can't think of them right now. Just come home to mommy.

such a shame, that handbag looks great, you never know you may ifnd another one ever here, I just got that one in my last blog post really recently and for only £2.99!
ReplyDeleteThat one was such a deal. I've already started building up the stash again, teehee. :)
DeleteAwe such a drag. I hope you find that magical box! Your post reminds me of a bunch of purses and bags I got rid of once in a move. I was in a hurry packing up the last things and just said f#%^+ it, I have too much stuff, this box can go to Goodwill. I regret that decision often, as there was a gorgeous carpet bag in that box. What was I thinking?! Oh well, on one count I was right ... I do have too much stuff!

I know, I think I was kind of at that point - exhausted and not thinking straight. I just hope that box didn't somehow make it into the donate pile. But if it did, oh well, I'm sure they'll make someone happy! :)
DeleteOh No!! That's sad. Are you having your mom check for you?
ReplyDeleteI sure love those boots. They look awesome!
Yah, but she's busy looking after my two cats I left behind in her care, so I don't want to push it ....
DeleteThose booties were bought new six or so years ago - Michael Kors, new but 50 percent off. I had just moved to Toronto and had no job - it was like Carrie from Sex and the City - I had no groceries, but I had those boots! :)
I hope you will find them!
ReplyDeleteI lost stuff in my numerous moves and i still bugs me, i left someone in charge of the move and she did not do a good job.
It is annoying when it is special tihings!
Thanks Ariane! That's too bad that I left someone in charge who didn't do a good job especially since you obviously trusted her to do a job. :)
Deletewow..you have a wonderful bag collection. My favorite is the carpet bag. I find it hard to thrift bags, usually the leather is peeling or I will find some bad stains. Or you get this strong stench that puts you off...lol...it makes you wonder what people put inside their bags. Great outfit too, I love the knee high boots! You look glam and chic!

Mongs, I have (or don't!) MORE carpet bags that are lost, alas. I agree that it's difficult to find vintage bags in good condition. I always smell them first as they can often have a musty smell inside - I assume they stink as they've been sitting in a closet for years untouched! :)
DeleteGlad I found your delightful blog. I also moved from Canada to England, although quite a long time ago now (1996). I DO love it here, so would be interested to hear about your experiences. I think Toronto is great (having been there once).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, hope you check out my blog.
Much love,
Rosemary from www.foreveronthecatwalkoflife.com
Rosemary, so glad you found me - I have checked out your lovely blog and am now a follower. So you have been in England for over 15 years - where did you come from? I am only three months in and am finding many differences, surprisingly. Different expressions, different brands in the sypermarket, different fashions - even different ways of pronouncing the same words! Plus I am used to a more urban life and we now live in a small retirement town in the north - but the slowness of life is peaceful and surprisingly welcome. What's your story? Feel free to email at grungequeen@yahoo.com. Best, Kelly
DeleteJust thought to mention, it CAN take a long time for things to travel overseas. I got all of our stuff eventually, but I was panicking a bit before it arrived. Then, when it finally got unpacked (had to store it for a couple of years) I looked at the things in the boxes, and said, "What the heck did I bring that for???" Fortunately, Gorgeous Husband said, "Well, it must have been important at the time." I was so grateful he didn't yell at me for packing crap.

I know, my shipment did come in (pretty quickly, which was nice), and I had similar reactions when unpacking. Alas, I had a double move in that I moved from Toronto to my hometown of Ottawa before immigrating to the UK. The bags were definitely not part of my UK shipment, so I am really really hoping they are in Ottawa with my Mom! :)
DeleteOh that carpet bag and the patent one are so lovely. I hope they turn up in your mum's basement. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks Curtise, me too. Otherwise, I CAN buy more, teehee. :)
