Thoughts on Brit fashion mags, as I convalesce

I wish I could show you a pic of moi frolicking in the northern English countryside - today is the first warm, rain-free day we've had in the last six days. Alas, the Grunge Queen is sitting on her butt reading mags and a Nick Hornby novel (set in northern England, of course) as she broke her toe/foot yesterday - the same one she breaks on an annual basis just by looking at it the wrong way.

Wah.

But my mannie is looking after me, never you fear.

What I love about some of the chick mags here is you get free stuff with them - in this case a (rather toxic) liquid and pencil eyeliner duo and a (very nice) metallic pewter mineral powder eye shadow. (Last year my Brit mannie boought me one with a lip gloss - if you think I didn't love him before that you can bet I did after!).

I'm not a huge magazine buyer anymore, but I'm pretty sure we don't have the free-makeup-with-magazines phenom in Canada.

I actually like Brit fashion mags way better than the North American kind. They're cheekier (usually there's a funny he-said-she-said dual column where a male and female columnist give their perspectives on a particular gender or sex topic); less celebrity-obsessed; and contain lighthearted features (like the one in the cute, book-size Marie Claire, about a group of college grads 10 years on, a "Where are they now?" type thing); as well as neat fashion spreads (like what bloggers are wearing to the Glastonbury fest - which is essentially the Woodstock of the UK); and finally more serious features about female political figures.

In North America, the ethic of fashion mags seems more hyper-obsessive insecure. Generally, I hate them. So I am finding UK mags rather refreshing, like a breath of (cool, northernly English) fresh air.

Look, my mannie got some too - but all he got was a free magazine with one.

  2. tee hee no it isn't Nelly, not that I know of! And yes I agree, I'm a silly klutz and I'm so po'd at myself!! The only Aussie mags I know are the decor ones, and they're lovely. Are the fashion ones as irreverent and refreshing as the UK ones?

  3. I'm so sorry to hear you've hurt your foot. I hope the NHS is being good to you?
Where abouts in the north are you holidaying? I'm in Manchester.
I do like the magazines here in the UK but we do have the gossip led ones. I think I've noticed a trend to putting celebs on the front cover of magazines in the last 5-10 years which certainly never used to be the norm.

  4. I'm in St. Annes but my beau is a Londoner and we're going there tomorrow! Will pop into Manchester on our way. Haven't done much touring as we've needed some nesting time, and now, foot-healing time, alas!

I agree about the celeb thing; it's getting out of control in North America. I still find your mags cheekier and less 'establishment', but I bet you'd find the same or a similar thing with ours!

Trying to convince my mannie to bring me to a London flea market - any tips on vintage markets or shops to go to, in London or in Manchester (i love 1970s costume jewellery)?

  5. In Manchester it is worth checking out the Northern qtr which is wear the majority of the vintage shops are. I'm not sure how long you're over for but there is a great event near Manchester in Stockport called Vintage Village (2nd Sunday of the month) which has more vintage than you can poke a stick at and you might find something there.

  6. Thanks for suggestions A Thrifty Mrs! Unforch we did a flying trip into just the outskirts of Manchester and didn't get a chance to do vintage shopping, though I am hoping my beau will let me do some vintage seeking in London! But I am filing away Vintage Village for future reference - is it a flea market event?
