Can you really let go of nostalgiac stuff, even if you never wear it?

As you look at this rather freakish close-up, that is the question I'm pondering tonight. I bought this 1970s?-esque pendant at a church sale years ago for a couple bucks at most. I have worn it - once. It doesn't really fit into my life or style, but I still love it.

I love it because it reminds me of those 1970s Christmas Tree ornaments we used to hang on the tree while growing up - you know, the cut-out balls with the foiled concave insides. It is just special, even though I never wear it.

But the agony sets in as I'm in the process of saying goodbye to some material things in my life, and this baby has gone in the sell pile, then out, then in, and is now in limbo. So the question is, do you get rid of pieces that rank high on the emotional resonance scale, or do you favour practicality, and pass it on to someone else? That, dear readers, is the existential question for tonight!

  1. If in doubt keep it.you may regret it later otherwise.

  2. If it has an emotional attachment, or a memory of sort, I tend to keep it. Difficult though, with minimal storage, I can relate to this!

  3. I rarely tell people to keep things they don't use but this pendant should be kept because it's adorable, and clearly means something to you. Add it to your christmas box decorations and smile everytime you take it out. P.S: I wish I could do the same with the melon hat I have kept from the '90s and can't part with!!!! :)

  4. I have a ridiculous amount of vintage costume jewellery and in a mad moment last month put a heap of it on eBay. It sold really well, I haven't missed any of it and it's a great excuse to look for more. xxx

  5. Ah, thanks for all the comments on this very difficult subject! My rationale, sometimes, is that it's mall, and I can keep it as it doesn't take up a lot of space. Multiply that philosophy times ten, though, and you may have a problem! And yes, I can relate to the other side: kick one piece of vintage bling out the door, and open the door for another! So, jury's still out, my friends!

  7. I usually end up keeping stuff like that, but then again, that's why our apartment is too full with too much stuff!
