More memories from childhood home

As I was telling you in yesterday's post about my childhood home that was just torn down, my sisters and I, and our friends, spent a lot of time playing outside when we were growing up, and the memories abound. Here's my twin (left) and I with our childhood cat, Cleo (who followed us home when we were 13 and lived for 20 years!), on the day we were confirmed in the United church, age 14. Our backyard was so lovely. My sis was married ten years after this photo was taken, near the trees you see behind us.(Please forgive picture quality; I don't have a scanner so I've taken pictures of pictures for this and yesterday's post!).

Another fun memory when we were in our early 20s, after we had moved away to school etc: the annual Easter boat race in the creek across the house. We'd bring the boyfriends home for Easter weekend, and in the afternoon, we'd craft boats out of newspaper and race them in the rushing waters of the creek. There was always beer involved, as you can see. We did this for only a few years but it's still a great memory.

Lots of memories from inside the tiny house too. The white wall-mounted phone by the back door and kitchen table (which used to be black in the really old days). The Captain's chair was at the end of the table and at mealtime, Dad always sat there. But when it wasn't meal time and the phone rang, that chair was where we sat and gabbed.

In fact the kitchen table was the place we'd congregate, after mealtime and at different parts of the day - doing homework when teens; playing Trivia Pursuit with the fam after dinner; or just having tea and talking. Here I am (middle) with my sisters, celebrating our birthdays in the early 1990s.

We'd also hang a lot as a family in the tiny family room, which housed a large and very beautiful Persian rug, a big sectional on which we all lounged, teak bookcases filled with books, and artifacts from my Dad's travels to South Africa, China and Australia. Here are the three sisters in their early 20s, all home for Christmas, wearing our new robes given to us by a close family friend.

A silly yet intimate photo of my Dad (me, looking scary in the middle) and twin, again in the early 1990s after we had left home. Can you see the black wire running up to my lap? I'm pretty sure that was a remote control for our VCR! RETRO!!

  2. These have been wonderful, happy and enlightening posts.
Things seemed a lot simpler back then sometimes.
Thanks for sharing some of your special memories.
It has made me look at some of my old photo albums and smile, laugh and cry.

  6. The Witch, wow what a lovely comment. I am so glad you took a trip down memory lane too. Sometimes it just really does ground you and reinforce who you are to look back, doesn't it?

  7. Veronica, I hope you are feeling better! I too have been sick and it has been a long haul. I am CRAVING lilacs now too; can hardly wait until they bloom in May. Yup, I have a twin sis. We're fraternal, not identical, but we're the best of pals ....

Hey, do you know anything about The PaperBag Princess closing? Someone Tweeted me that it was closed about a month back .....

  8. My dear sister, I have ALL the family photos from when we were growing up. My plan was to put them in albums years ago but that never happened - and I don't have a scanner do do it digitally so I actually just took pics of these. We really need to come up with a plan to share them with everyone in the fam - ideas???

  9. No, I had no idea about the Paperbag Princess closing down, I've never been to the store only heard of it! Too bad!! In regards to your photos, I know that Blacks is now offering to take people's 'boxes' with photographs, they scan them and burn CDs for the family. I don't know how much it costs, but it sounds like a great idea to me!!! Scanning is such a pain! I think pictures of pictures work just as well :) Hope you're feeling better Kelly, I think I'm finally on the mend! Now, I have to tell you.... I do love the 1970s necklaces too, I think they're beautiful and the turtlenecks... well, I pretty much still live in them (but you wanna know what makes me a true 1970s baby? It's my unconditional love for corduroy!! hihihi, I'm serious. My friends never miss an opportunity to remind me how 'wrong' that is!!! pfff, not so wrong, I say!!! :):) What do you think?

  10. Veronica, I must be going nuts; I thought you had told me about the Paper Bag Princess? I'm not sure if it's closed for sure; need to verify but I thought I'd check with you first as I thought you knew it.

Glad you're on the mend, and wow, that Blacks tip is a super duper one! Will I have to pay them hundreds of dollars to scan my thousands of photos, I wonder? I will check it out as I really want to share all the pics I've hoarded with my fam.

Ah, you're a corduroy fiend! I think you must blog on this my dear, as that's one 70s style I haven't latched onto - here's a challenge: do a 'corduroy for a week' special - wouldn't that be fun? Tee hee, I am not teasing; I am genuinely interested to see how you, the stylish gal with an amazing haircut and handbags, can make corduroy look chic!

  11. OHHH, KELLLYYY!!!! I thought you'd be on my side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No corduroy?????!!!!!!! sniff. sniff. I'm so sad. Now, I'm up for the challenge but I'd have to find a few more things to share. At the moment I only have one pair of grey pants. I need more amunition. I'm up for the challenge if you're willing to wait til the fall, should give me enough time! I think corduroy is just 'misunderstood' like some people, or some necklaces...you know? I will prove my point, and I might even post a vintage picture of my ever so awesome corduroy '77 jumper I still wish I had! You hang in tight, I think I can bring it back (OK, I'm delusional now, but this could be fun!!) :)P.S.: I'd kill for a 1970s corduroy purse too.
