Thrifted regrets & looks you hated from 2010

Regrets. I've had a few. But not that many in the thrifted department! When you start thrifting you want to buy literally EVERYTHING because it's so cheap. That, dear reader, can lead to the odd mistake. Then, as time goes by, you refine your eye and pick only quality goods.

Here are some of my thrift regrets, some of my thrift looks I wasn't sure about - and a couple items readers hated.

WRONG IN SO MANY WAYS. Not sure what planet I was on when I bought this belt - perhaps in the land of Flash Gordon or Chronicles of Narnia? Oops.
FUGLY PHASE. I bought these shoes around the same time I bought the belt. Coincidence? Maybe I was possessed by evil thrifting spirits that took control of my normally savvy thrift style.
SHE HATED THEM? I loved these vintage Made in Italy shades I bought at a local vintage shop. But a reader begged to differ, leaving a comment that the shades didn't suit my face at all.
TRUE, I'M CONFLICTED ABOUT THRIFTED FUR. But I can't help loving this vintage 1970s suede coat with fur collar - chic and it keeps me so warm! One reader expressed disappointment over my choice.
CAN YOU SAY PINK? Of course I thought I looked grand in this thrifted dress, scarf and coat when I wore it last winter. Now, well, I guess my style has evolved. I still like the big scarf though.
HELLO, BARNEY. I DO like the colour of this thrifted coat, really, but it's a bit Barney and I think the proportions are a bit off - and the look, combined with the thrifted plastic (plastic?? oh dear) boots is more than a bit clunky.

  1. Hysterical post. I just got over a non-fashion phase that lasted 2+ years, so I know I'm bound to make many mistakes in my journey toward fashion rediscovery. I actually love the glasses on you. The belt, well, I'd have to agree with the Flash Gordon reference, and the shoes . . . oh my. I went thru a "comfort is priority" stage -- what a crap-load of ugly shoes I bought that I never wear. : )

  2. I like the sunglasses!

... just don't pair them with the shoes ;).

  3. Hi Kris, yah, mistakes only make us better thrifters, non? I'm pretty stringent with myself now, but there have been some doozies in the past. Hopefully won't go there again! Glad you liked the glasses - have never been 100 percent sure about 'em!

  4. Tee hee, thanks Kasey - the shoes were quickly RE-donated back to the thrift store in question once I realized the error of my thrifting ways! But the glasses aren't budging from my repertoire!

  6. Vonlipi, I hear ya on the pink outfit! Funny, was just thinking of you as I came across a blog with a load of Pyrex - the Vintage Spinster. You may already know her as she follows the Pyrex Collective too....

  7. Gosh I've made a number of poor purchases at thrift stores. But like your shoes...I donated them back to the thrift stores.

As for some not liking your choice of a vintage fur...we can't please everyone and we shouldn't try. If you like it that is all that matters!

I've gotten 2 incredible sheepskin coats, one for my husband and one for myself, for $10 each at a local Salvation Army. They are incredibly warm and have gotten many complements. I've also been luckish with fur coats. They last a winter season then I take them apart treat the leather with the intention to turn them in to pillows. Someday.

Btw, thanks for letting us know about Canadian Thrift! I'd never heard of it before reading about it tonight.

  8. Hi Dane,

I know. You can't please every one and that's ok: I put myself out there and don't mind if peeps disagree.

I found a fur coat once but it was malting (? shedding, basically) and then it ripped apart it was so dry. For the time that I wore it it kept me super super warm but when it split down the seam I chucked it, sigh. Didn't realize you could treat them??

Canadian Thrift is new - right at the end of my street! Great guys - actually I wrote about them in the paper I write for and forgot to post the link here - thanks for reminding me to do so. They're different from Canadian Thrift Stores, which is a local chain. This particular store has lots of good bling, some vintage, some contemporary and at super great prices - rare for a thrift store these days when bling is involved!
