Olive Oil or French chic?

When I was 14 I used to wear this outfit my Mom called my Olive Oil look. I thought I looked so super chic, with my long straight skirt, little granny booties, and oversize cardigan. But as Mom pointed out years later, I did rather look like the stringy character from Popeye.

I thought I looked rather chic in this thrifted outfit yesterday, consisting of a wool Ports sweater (maybe $5?) and green wool skirt made in France (again, $4 or $5). Boots were new, but purchased a decade ago at the Bay, and the necklace made with vintage beads by Toronto designer Gay Isber).

But when I saw these pics of me, I wondered if I hadn't resurrected my Olive Oil look? The square-toed boots are a wee bit dated and make me look rather gawky-Olive Oli-ish. And the long straight skirt makes me look, well, long and straight.

Shades of my 14-year old style self or French chic?

  1. Of course, I'm biased when it comes to skirts ... I think it's all about the way you wear the skirt - no peter pan collar blouse for you - the sweater, jewelery and boots give it a grown up yet funky (or should I say 'rad') look.

Olive oil - I don't think so, Ms. Grunge. Tres chic, vraiment francais.

  2. I agree. The look is lovely on you. I am personally not a fan of square toes, but I wouldn't say they are out of style. I've even seen them in (some) stores recently, so that makes every toe shape a possibility!! And if you can pull off a look, like you can, you make it fashionable and "in fashion" doesn't matter.

  4. L'age moyen, merci!! I know you appreciate a good skirt, and je love this one! Thanks for reassuring me I haven't reverted to my 14-year old look!

  5. Anonymous, thanks to you too. I agree about the toe thing - I've had some shoes for as long as I've had these boots, and the 'toe' styles keep coming back. And as you suggest I'm not so much a slave to the trends that I wouldn't wear these if they were deemed out-of-date by the fashion gods!
