My parents are trash pickers too!
I feel like a proud mommie. Except I'm really a proud daughter!! When I was home for Thanksgiving last weekend, I saw this wicker set on my Mom and Dad's bricked in area outside their front door. (I added the pumpkin to make it look more festive).
Readers, they trash picked it.
Well you can imagine - I couldn't have felt more proud. Sure it's a wee bit rough around the edges, fraying a bit on the legs, but good enough for outside for the kitties to languish on as they sun themselves these glorious fall afternoons.
There's even a table.
Don't get me wrong: it's not like Mom and Dad haven't trashed picked before. I year ago, methinks, I did a little post after coming home from a Thanksgiving trip showcasing the worn chairs my Mom had plucked from the trash and used as ledges for her potted flowers out on the back deck. And another time Mom took home a teak desk found curbside.
But let's just say they wouldn't have trash picked a few years ago. Granted it IS becoming more fashionable/acceptable nowadays, but well, I'd like to think I had just a wee bit of influence here - a daughter's prerogative, perhaps!

Ha ha, isn't it great when parents learn from the kids!
ReplyDeleteToo funny! I have kids probably your age, 3 girls, one lives in an old neighborhood and always is dumpster diving at the end of the month when people move from surrounding apartments.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing what people will leave behind when they move!
Me? I've picked up from the side of the road, but mostly find my treasures at garage sales.
My 9 year old grandaughter always says most things in my house are from garage sales...! Aside from larger furniture pieces, she's right!!
Have a great week!
Wish I had of found that set first. It would look lovely in my Gazebo. It also looks lovely on their front door step. Good for them! Why do people waste so much money just because it may not be perfect. Really I can't even notice the fraying on the leg.
ReplyDeleteThrifted Treasure, tee hee, I'd like to think so!
ReplyDeleteLucy - By the Hill - wowsers I have just checked out some of your garage sale finds and I have vintage costume jewellery envy! I am adding you to my blogroll!
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of furniture from the trash, perhaps not the best strategy given Toronto has a bed bug epidemic at the moment but I have been ok so far! The camelback loveseat you see on my header is slip-covered but it's a 1960s Barrymore sofa (Canadian) a beau hauled out of the trash for me years ago - two of them! The dresser in the header was from the trash, and the blue velvet chair just to the right of the screen was picked up curbside a couple Thanksgivings ago on my way home from Ottawa!
The rest are thrift store finds. I don't do garage sales as often but when I do I always find good stuff. Will stay tuned to your adventures!
Well, The Witch, I think, if I can indulge in a massive generalization, that we live in a disposable society where we learn to value low prices above all else, including quality, history a bit of imperfection and a good story! I sure know that I thrift shop to find all of the above - including the low prices! Yes I am sure the set would have looked just darling in your new gazebo!
ReplyDeleteYour furniture finds are fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking out my blog..........I don't know if you looked around at my garages sale posts, but I did get some fab bling this summer, I got more rhinestones and neat vintage jewellery in a couple of weeks sales than I have in the last 10 years!
Lucy - By the Hill, I will take a gander through your posts - all you have to say is vintage jewellery and I am there!
