Ever have a vintage piece you love, but just can't wear as you're scared of sending the wrong message?Sometimes I really hate the politically correct world we live in in the western world.
But, while I love this vintage hand-rolled silk scarf by Vera that I've had for years, I just haven't been able to wear it for years.
Why? Because I loathe bull fighting.
Didn't think of that when I bought it in my early 20s.I think it's quite vintage. It has the Vera name printed on the silk, but I've never seen a tag like this sewn into the scarf - if they were a typical thing I guess they must fall off over the years.
I haven't had this vintage feeling with anything else but fur. I bought a second-hand fur coat a few years ago and wore it for a winter. It kept me super warm in the frigid Canadian winter, but I couldn't handle the implications and got rid of it. But I still wear a vintage suede coat that I featured on this very blog that has a fur collar.Do you have any vintage pieces that give you this kind of angst?
Well, IF you ever 'NEED' to part with that little VERA, (to ease your conscience...) just let me KNOW!! VERA NEUMANN is one of my favorite designer's - she loved to travel the world and she sketched her travels, then put them on every day items so that her 'art' wasn't too 'precious' and ordinary people could enjoy art in their everyday life (sheets, dishtowels, cloth napkins, etc...) . Anthropologie just got the copyrights to rerelease her designs (for MAJOR $$$$) and they recently put out a book on her http://ssveltestuff.blogspot.com/2010/03/7-8-worth-wait.html
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm sorry - I didn't mean to ramble on... but if you ever need to purge that 'politically incorrect' scarf - I would be a most loving home 8-)

I can see your point. I'm also not a fan of bull fighting. If they didn't have to kill the bull it may be different.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't want to wear it either.
Sounds as if you have a taker already.
Time to purge it.
I have a vintage fur stole that I love but cant bring myself to wear, so I do understand.

svelteSTUFF, you are a fountain of information! I had no idea A, that the designer traveled so extensively, and B, that Anthro is releasing her designs -- love it!! I am checking out your blog post and will reblog it as I always look for her scarves in the thrift stores. You are top o' my list if I ever get rid of said scarf. As I said I love it, but just can't wear it!
ReplyDeleteThe Witch, I hear ya. I just would hate to think I'm promoting or or being blase about such a brutal practice.
ReplyDeleteSharon, ditto with me for that mink coat I thrifted in the past. I think it's a tricky thing, though. You could argue that wearing old or recycling fur diverts fur from the landfill and doesn't contribute to an existing fur industry ... though it would be hard to argue against the fact that you'd still be promoting fur culture ....
