Cheap n' easy natural beauty 'secrets'

Ok, so we had a couple fellow Vaseline users comment on yesterday's post - good to know I'm not out there alone!

But there are other natural beauty alternatives that are inexpensive.

I buy avocado oil at natural health food stores and use it as a moisterizer. Avocado is good to eat and put on your face - all those Essential Fatty Acids plump up aging skin! Actually my skin has never looked better since I've started using the stuff.

For the odd blemish I get around certain times of the month, I use a dab - a small dab - of tea tree oil. You can get it at the fancy shops but as you see here I bought the Life brand at Shoppers Drug Mart as it's cheaper.

Use sparingly and try a test patch with this oil first as it is quite strong. If I get too vigorous in my application I end up with a red spot. But it is good for drying up zits.

  1. I have used vaseline as a makeup remover for years! Now I don't wear much makeup but I still use it for my lips at night. I will check out the Avocado oil!

  2. well, well, well ... here I is again, LOL,LOL

it's funny you mention avocado for the skin --just last week, my 2 precious Nieces who are 12 and 10 had their face plastered as a mask with avocado fruit all over their face. They said "Zia" (meaning Aunt in Italian) "you, should start this treatment at least once a week because you'll look younger in no time" can you beleive my little chickens are already thinking "anti-aging!"

    See ya tonight Kell :)

  3. Hi Linda, I really love the avocado oil too, and it's lighter than the Vaseline for sure.

  4. Hey Cathy-pie, sometimes i DO put old avocados that are too icky to eat and mash em up and put em on my face! I can and I can't believe your nieces are worrying about anti-aging -- but hey we do live in a marketer's world now don't we?

  5. I will try the avocado oil. I use tea-tree oil as a moisturizer and it also has antiseptic properties. I had a toe nail that kept splitting no matter what I did. I dabbed tea tree oil on it for a few wks and the split healed completely and never came back. I still dab on my toe nails couple of times a week to keep them moisturized. Another up and coming moisturizer/ treatment will be honey which has been used for centuries. Unfortunately it is not approved in Canada yet. Medihoney is available in the US and all over Aust and NZ. It has to be manuka(scientific name is leptospermum) honey. There a variety of products avail such as dressings(for diabetic ulcers), burns and eczema. My son has used the eczema cream which has kept the itchiness at bay and as well healed up some old scars. He also likes that it smells like breakfast cereal!

  6. Chris,

Tea tree oil as a moisturizer, that's interesting, I thought it had more antiseptic qualities to it. Never heard of Medihoney but i know honey is a fab moisterizer as it's a humectent, meaning it seals in moisture.
