This is my The Sartorialist inspired shot, a style blog I'm absolutely hooked on (along with thousands of others). It's been a busy week but the other night I spent hours scrolling through the artsy, individualist and just plan different street fashion photos posted there.
Sometimes when it's cold outside (as it is in Toronto, brr) it's easier to get into a bit of a style rut where you're not as inspired about what you're wearing. Let's just say this blog was the perfect antidote to my wardrobe malaise.
I didn't think too hard about this ensemble - I just internalized the confidence and the vibe of The Sartorialist and voila, boho Euro chic!
Of course, the entire outfit is second-hand thrift, with the exception of the new leather belt picked up for $2 at the dollar store!American Eagle Outfitters wool houndstooth blazer, under $10 at Stretch Thrift.
Underneath, sheer MEXX top with sweater cuffs and cowl neck, $3.99 at Stretch Thrift.
Bongo skinny jeans, $14.99 from Value Village in Ottawa.
Purple booties, around $14.99 at Value Village.
I was joking with friend and fellow reporter Christopher Reynolds, who graciously took these pics, that this particular shot really is my The Sartorialist shot ....I was poking fun at the "chicness" of some of the people featured in the shots on that blog as invariably they're walking with a cell phone in one hand and a cigarette in the other (especially the London, Paris and Milan shots), looking tres nonchalant.
So here I am looking nonchalant, holding my Blackberry.
I've never advocated ciggies as a style motif but I hate to admit it some of these people do look very chic holding their smokes. Sure the look would be different if they actually were sucking on the things ....
Happy weekend! If you're in TO and driving this blizzardly morning, drive safely!
Love the look and the poses! I agree that we can get into major fashion ruts in the mid-winter bleakness that is our country. of course, a trip to the thrift store is the perfect remedy. The prevelance of smoking in all the stylish films of the last century seems remarkable but I remember parties, stores, restaurants, everywhere really thick with cigarette smoke so I guess the movies were no exception.
ReplyDeleteDear Grunge Queen,
ReplyDeleteLooking very "uninterested" as every super model should! In contrast, your post is as interesting as it gets (as usual!)! Instead of smokes, it would be neat to see everyone posing with Blow Pops!
You are just super cute! I love your outfit!! You work it girl! ;) LOL!! Just recently found your blog & have been "stalking".. I enjoy your posts! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteGreat outfit!!! Love your big grin in the first photos and then the whole blase pose of the last, very sartorialist!
ReplyDeleteJenifir, yes we would know about the weather in our respective cities wouldn't we? Except TO isn't quite as cold as Ottawa. Still, riding the subway in the morning can be so depressing - it's a sea of black. I found my visit to The Sartorialist very inspiring and hope it stays with me!
ReplyDeleteI remember when smoking was everywhere. You would go out to a bar or resto and have to wash your clothes upon coming home - NOT so glam! I remember when they boarded up the ashtrays in the Rideau Centre in the 80s - so odd to think of smoking in a MALL now isn't it? I used to do the fashion shows at the Bay downtown about 10 years ago and I remember the sales guys from appliances telling me that they used to smoke on the sales floor in days gone by!! Unreal!! Still, if you check out the blog that gave me my inspiration those peeps holding ciggies DO look glam. Has that Hollywood image from the 1930s onwards stayed with us, and how? It's not as though you see many celeb shots with smokes now, even the street ones ....
River-Rose, that's too funny. I had to look up 'blow pop' - am I horribly sad? I shouldn't misrepresent the blog overly: many of the people look 'real' and non-posed on The Sartorialist ... not like the 'look at me' self-absorbed looking shots you see on other blogs or publications that do street style shots. But I do find that some of the peeps from across the pond have this look that's uninterested - as they smoke and talk on their phone or text message they don't seem to give a crap that their photo is being taken - kinda to be admired in a way, eh?
ReplyDeleteHalfdozendaily, thanks for stalking! I love it when new readers find me and then announce themselves! I was pretty happy with this look - it had this effortless boho-cool look that so many on The Sartorialist have... Have a great wkend too and hope to see you again in here!
ReplyDeleteThanks Thrifted Treasure! Are you hooked on that blog as well? I have to mete out daily doses or else I will stay on for hours and hours ....
ReplyDeleteI can remember when every floor of the local hosp had "smoking rooms"! Btw, love your poses! Have to share with u my score at the local Goodwill today...a Coach purse for $5.99!! Real McCoy with product # embossed on the leather label inside!
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteOMG so do I - I was in the hospital a lot as a kid and they'd call the smoking room the 'sun room' as it was facing west!
Congrats on Coach bag!! You should send a pic and I can post it!
